Tourism is one of Portland's largest industries, generating more than $1.4 billion in annual direct economic spending, benefiting Portland residents and businesses.
The Portland Tourism Development District (PTDD) ensures that funding for Visit Portland's selling, marketing, and promotion of Portland as a visitor destination is competitive. Effective September 18, 2023, under the Maine State Development District Law, MRS
Title 30-A, Chapter 206, Development Districts. and as directed by the Portland City Council, orders 256, 257, and 258 an assessment of 1.5% is levied on non-seasonal hotels with 40 rooms or more in the boundaries of the City of Portland. At the hotel's discretion, a Destination Marketing Fee may be passed on to customers as a separate item on hotel folios.
Visit Portland, governed by a board, will ensure that the funds benefit the assessed businesses by allocating them to programs that draw conventions, meetings, events, destination weddings, motorcoaches, international visitors, and leisure travelers to Portland.
